ING Engineering Inc.

Ian Glenn, MSEE, P.Eng.

Ian Glenn is Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of ING Engineering Inc. He is also President Emeritus of UVS Canada.

Ian Glenn’s education includes a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering concentrated on digital signal processing, electromagnetics, and data fusion from the US Naval Postgraduate School, as well as, an undergrad in Mechanical Engineering from RMC, graduate studies in tank design in the UK, and Army Command and Staff College.

Amongst the highlights of a 22-year military career as an armoured officer then as an Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) officer, was the opportunity to create and architect the $650M Canadian Army's Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) program. Since 2000, he has led ING Engineering Inc., an Ottawa-based engineering firm focused on architecting and delivering critical defence and security capabilities to the public and private sectors - particularly solutions focused in the realm of Command and Control, in addition to, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) - including the employment strategies for unmanned systems. Ian's strengths are innovation, strategic thinking and the ability to solve organizationally and technologically complex problems. He is an internationally acknowledged leader in the fields of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Data Fusion. He was extensively involved in progressing UAV interoperability within NATO. He continues to lead in this field through teaching technical UAV interoperability courses at institutions such as the US Naval Postgraduate School. His algorithmic work in data fusion is at the core of fusion systems fielded by the US Navy and Lockheed Martin.

His effectiveness in divining clear, achievable technological solutions spanning multiple disciplines is seen in the adoption of his ISTAR Architecture as the blueprint of the Canadian Army of Tomorrow 'Sense' function. Uniquely, he possesses both an in-depth understanding of operations as well as leading-edge technology. His ability to integrate the viewpoints of both senior management and staff allows him to arrive rapidly at solutions that are both operationally effective and efficient. As one of Canada’s leading C4ISR system-of-system architects, he has worked successfully with agencies from within DND, Defence R&D Canada, the international defence community, industry, and academia to create workable 'real-world' solutions to complex requirements.

Ian’s passion over the past decade has remained unmanned vehicles, particularly UAVs, and their potential in both civil and military environments. He founded Unmanned Vehicle Systems Canada in 2002 as the national non-profit association representing both public and private innovation in unmanned vehicle systems. UVS Canada has grown rapidly to become the focal point for the Canadian UVS Community both nationally and internationally – its annual conference has emerged as one of the largest and influential of its type in the world. Drawing on his extraordinary network, Ian dedicates much of his time to helping Canadians grow this important sector in his role as the volunteer President Emeritus of UVS Canada.
